Project Overview

This 50,000 m² modern industrial park was designed and fabricated for Yunda Express's regional logistics hub in Bozhou, Anhui Province. Phase II of the project (the F Zone) serves as a major sorting and distribution center, featuring large-span portal frame structures with high-bay racking systems for automated parcel handling equipment.

The complex comprises multiple interconnected buildings, with the main distribution center spanning 200 meters in length and 80 meters in width, with 14 meters eave height. Total steel consumption: 1,200 tons of Q355B high-strength steel. The main portal frame uses tapered H-sections with moment-resisting connections, designed to Chinese GB 50017 and GB 50009 standards.

All structural calculations were prepared by our engineering team and reviewed by a third-party consulting firm for compliance with Chinese building codes. The design accounts for Bozhou's wind and snow loads (basic wind pressure: 0.45 kN/m², basic snow pressure: 0.35 kN/m² per GB 50009), and seismic design Category 7 per GB 50011.

Project Challenges

1. Large-Scale Multi-Building Coordination. The 50,000 m² complex includes 5 interconnected buildings, each requiring coordinated structural design to ensure expansion joint alignment, consistent eave heights, and shared utility corridors. We developed a master structural plan that unified foundation types, column grids, and roof slopes across all buildings.

3. Tight Construction Schedule. The client required the entire 50,000 m² complex to be completed in 6 months. We mobilized 2 of our 5 production lines exclusively for this project, completing all 1,200 tons of steel fabrication in 35 working days.

4. Logistics Operations During Construction. Parts of the existing facility remained operational during Phase II construction. Our erection sequence was carefully planned to minimize disruption to ongoing logistics operations, with temporary safety barriers and designated vehicle access routes.

Our Solution

Design Phase: Our engineering team developed a 3D structural model of the entire 50,000 m² complex. The main sorting facility (Building A) uses a 80m clear-span portal frame with intermediate columns at 20m spacing. Buildings B through E are 40m wide multi-span structures with 10m column spacing. All buildings share a common 14m eave height for consistent material handling equipment installation.

Fabrication: All main frame members were fabricated from Q355B steel plate using CNC plasma cutting. H-section columns (H700×300×14×24) and rafters (H800×300×16×28) were welded using submerged arc welding (SAW) with full penetration welds verified by ultrasonic testing (UT). Total fabrication: 1,200 tons in 35 working days — using 2 dedicated production lines.

Cladding System: The roof uses 0.6mm galvanized steel sheeting with PVDF coating (RAL 9002 gray-white) and 80mm rockwool insulation (U-value 0.35 W/m²K). Walls use 100mm PIR sandwich panels with concealed fixing systems. All gutters and downpipes are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication.

Construction Management: A dedicated project management team coordinated the 5-building construction sequence. Building A (core sorting facility) was prioritized for earliest completion, followed by Buildings B-E. Crane allocation was optimized with 3 mobile cranes working simultaneously during peak erection periods.

Steel Structure Design

Portal Frame Design to GB 50017

The main portal frame was designed as a moment-resisting frame with fixed-base conditions. Column base plates use 600×600×36mm thick plates with 12× M30 anchor bolts. Building A provides an 80m clear span with 14m eave height. Buildings B-E are multi-span structures (40m width divided into 2 spans of 20m each).

Wind and Snow Load Analysis (GB 50009)

Bozhou's basic wind pressure: 0.45 kN/m² (50-year return period, GB 50009 Table E.1.3). Basic snow pressure: 0.35 kN/m² (GB 50009 Table E.2.3). Roof live load: 0.5 kN/m² for maintenance access. The design applied load combinations per GB 50009 Section 3.2 with load factors of 1.2 (dead load) and 1.4 (live/wind/snow loads).

Seismic Design (GB 50011)

Bozhou is classified as Seismic Design Category 7 (design basic acceleration: 0.10g, GB 50011 Table 3.2.2). The portal frame structure was analyzed using the equivalent lateral force method (GB 50011 Section 5.2). Seismic force-resisting system: moment-resisting frames in both transverse and longitudinal directions.

Floor Slab Design for High-Bay Racking

The main sorting floor (20,000 m²) is designed for 8.0 kN/m² live load (high-bay racking with automated conveyor systems). Floor slab: 200mm thick reinforced concrete (C30, 30 MPa) with steel mesh reinforcement (∅12@150mm both ways). Control joints at 6m spacing to prevent shrinkage cracking.

Fabrication Process

CNC Cutting & Machining

All steel plates are CNC-cut using a 12-head plasma cutting system with ±1mm tolerance. H-section columns and rafters are welded using automated submerged arc welding (SAW) with continuous welding wires. All full-penetration welds are 100% UT (Ultrasonic Testing) inspected per GB 50661.

Surface Treatment

Every member passes through our 8-wheel shot-blasting machine, achieving SA 2.5 surface profile. The coating system consists of: 1×75μm epoxy zinc-rich primer, 1×125μm epoxy intermediate coat, 1×80μm polyurethane topcoat. Total DFT: 280μm for interior members. All coating thickness is verified using SSPC-PA 2 gauge.

Production Management

With 1,200 tons to deliver in 35 working days, we allocated 2 production lines exclusively for this project. Daily output: 35-40 tons of fabricated steel. Each member was tagged with a QR code linked to the production database for real-time tracking. Daily progress photos were shared with the client's project management team.

Component Marking System

Each building was assigned a unique color code: Building A (red), B (blue), C (green), D (yellow), E (orange). Every member was tagged with its building code, zone number, and member ID for efficient site sorting and erection sequencing.

Quality Control

Laotie Steel operates an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system. For this Yunda project, we implemented additional QC protocols for the high-volume, tight-schedule production.

Dimensional Quality Control: Pre-shipment trial assembly verified that all portal frame connections aligned within ±2mm tolerance per GB 50205. We used a 3D coordinate measuring arm to verify critical connection dimensions for every 10th frame.

Welding Quality: All full-penetration welds were 100% UT inspected per GB 50661. Fillet welds were spot-checked using magnetic particle inspection (MPI) at 20% frequency. All welding procedures were qualified with welding consumables stored in heated cabinets.

Coating Inspection: Dry-film thickness (DFT) measurements were taken at 5 points per member (minimum). Any reading below 90% of specified DFT (252μm) was repaired with an additional stripe coat. Adhesion testing (cross-cut method per ASTM D3359) was performed on 5% of members.

Material Traceability: Each steel plate's mill test report (EN 10204 3.1 equivalent) was cross-referenced to the finished member's serial number. The client received a full material traceability dossier with photographs of each production stage.

Packing & Shipping

For this 1,200-ton structure destined for Bozhou (inland Anhui Province), we used domestic logistics rather than container shipping. All members were loaded onto flatbed trucks (20 trucks total) with protective tarpaulins and steel banding.

Truck Loading Plan: 8 trucks for main H-sections (columns and rafters, maximum length 14m), 6 trucks for secondary members (purlins, girts, bracing, eave struts), 4 trucks for cladding system (steel sheets, sandwich panels, flashings, gutters), 2 trucks for fasteners, sealants, and erection consumables.

Damage Protection: All threaded fasteners were capped with plastic end-caps. Steel sheets were interleaved with kraft paper to prevent abrasion. Sandwich panels were packed in moisture-barrier bags. Each truck load was accompanied by a detailed packing list cross-referenced to the erection drawing's zone numbers.

Logistics Coordination: Laotie Steel's logistics team coordinated with the client's site manager to schedule truck arrivals in sync with the erection sequence. Building A (core sorting facility) members were loaded first to enable early erection start. Average transit time from our Henan factory to Bozhou site: 6 hours by highway.

Installation Guide

Foundation Preparation

The client's local contractor poured reinforced concrete foundations per our foundation reaction report. Anchor bolt cages were supplied by Laotie Steel with laser-aligned positioning. Anchor bolt tolerances: ±2mm in position, ±3mm in elevation. Foundation concrete strength: Minimum C30 (30 MPa) per GB 50010.

Building A — Main Sorting Facility

Week 1-2: Main portal frame erection (80m span × 200m length). Each column base plate uses 12× M30 anchor bolts. Column verticality adjusted using laser plumb-bob. Rafter-to-column connections use high-strength friction-grip bolts (10.9/S grade). A 50T mobile crane used for main frame lifting.

Buildings B through E

Week 3-4: Multi-span frame erection. Buildings B-E installed simultaneously using 2 mobile cranes. Column spacing: 10m. Portal frames connected at eave level with longitudinal beams. Week 5-8: Purlin, girt, and bracing installation across all buildings. Week 9-12: Roof and wall cladding installation.

Erection Speed

A 20-person erection crew (split into 2 teams) achieved 600 m² per day for the main frame and 500 m² per day for cladding. Total on-site erection time: 60 working days (12 weeks) for all 5 buildings.
