2. Vapor Barrier

Condensation is the enemy of cold storage. A proper vapor barrier must be installed on the warm side of the insulation to prevent moisture migration:

  • Roof: Self-adhering membrane over the steel roof deck, below the insulation
  • Walls: Vapor-retardant facing on the warm side of insulated panels
  • Floor: Heavy-duty vapor barrier (polyethylene sheet, minimum 0.3mm) below the insulated slab

3. Floor Design

The floor is the most problematic area in cold storage:

Cold storage requires special steel detailing to avoid thermal bridges:

  • Column bases: Thermal break pads between column base plates and foundations
  • Roof penetrations: Insulated curbs for all roof penetrations (pipes, ducts, lights)
  • Door openings: Heated door frames with heavy-duty insulated rapid roll doors
  • Interior structure: Galvanized or epoxy-coated steel to resist condensation corrosion
