Steel Structure Factory Inspection: QC Checklist 2026

Complete quality control checklist for inspecting steel structures before shipment. Covers material verification, weld testing, coating checks, and pre-assembly inspection.

Steel Structure Factory Inspection: QC Checklist 2026

Importing a steel structure from overseas is a six-figure decision. The single most important thing you can do to protect that investment โ€” beyond choosing a certified supplier โ€” is a thorough factory inspection before your steel leaves China.

This guide covers what to check, when to inspect, and how to verify that your steel structure quality control standards are being met.

Why Factory Inspection Matters

ProblemOn-site ConsequenceEstimated Cost
Wrong steel gradeStructural failure risk, engineering re-review$5,000โ€“20,000
Poor welds (cracks, porosity)Rejection by local engineer, re-welding on site$3,000โ€“15,000
Incorrect bolt hole positionsComponents won't fit, on-site drilling delays$2,000โ€“8,000
Inadequate coating thicknessPremature corrosion, repaint within 3โ€“5 years$10,000โ€“30,000
Wrong dimensionsRework or re-order$10,000โ€“50,000+
A $1,500โ€“2,500 third-party inspection catches these issues before shipping โ€” delivering a 10ร— to 50ร— return on investment.

When to Inspect: The 4-Stage QC Model

Stage 1: Pre-Production Review (Week 1)

Verify shop drawings match your approved design, steel grade confirmed, WPS qualified, coating specification documented.

Stage 2: In-Process Inspection (Weeks 2โ€“3)

Check CNC cutting accuracy, weld quality on first batch, welder qualifications, fit-up accuracy.

Stage 3: Pre-Shipment Inspection (Week 4โ€“5)

The most critical stage. Cover material verification, dimensional inspection, welding quality, surface preparation and coating, pre-assembly, and marking/documentation.

Stage 4: Container Loading Inspection

Verify correct components, proper bracing, clear marking, container seal recorded.

Stage 3 Deep Dive: Pre-Shipment QC Checklist

1. Material Verification

  • Steel grade confirmation via Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1)
  • Material thickness via ultrasonic thickness gauge (ยฑ0.3mm)
  • Heat number traceability โ€” 100% match required

2. Dimensional Inspection

  • Column length: ยฑ2mm | Rafter length: ยฑ3mm
  • Beam straightness: L/1000, max 5mm
  • Bolt hole diameter: +0.5mm of bolt diameter
  • Inspect 100% of columns, 20% of other members

3. Welding Quality

  • Visual (VT): 100% of welds โ€” no cracks, undercut โ‰ค 0.5mm
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT): 10% of butt welds
  • Magnetic Particle (MT): 5% of fillet welds
  • Priority welds: column-to-base-plate, rafter apex, crane beam splices

4. Surface Preparation and Coating

  • Blast cleanliness: SA 2.5 minimum per ISO 8501-1
  • Surface profile: 50โ€“75ฮผm for epoxy systems
  • Total DFT: โ‰ฅ specified value (typically 200โ€“280ฮผm)
  • Coating continuity: holiday detector test

5. Pre-Assembly / Trial Fit

Assemble one representative bay to verify bolt hole alignment before shipping.

6. Marking and Documentation

Every component must carry piece mark, heat number, and weight. Collect: inspection report, MTRs, welder certificates, NDT reports, coating records.

Who Should Inspect?

OptionCostBest For
Buyer visits factory$1,500โ€“3,000First order, large projects
Third-party (SGS/BV/TรœV)$800โ€“2,500Most buyers
Local inspector$400โ€“800/dayRepeat orders
Supplier self-inspection + videoFreeLow-risk repeat orders

Red Flags: When to Reject a Shipment

Stop the shipment if you find: steel grade mismatch, systematic weld defects (>5% of tested), DFT below 60% of spec, bolt hole misalignment in pre-assembly, or supplier refuses inspection access.

How OldTie Handles Quality Control

  • 6 inspection checkpoints โ€” Incoming material โ†’ Cutting โ†’ Welding โ†’ Surface treatment โ†’ Pre-assembly โ†’ Final inspection
  • 100% visual weld inspection + 10% UT on critical welds
  • SA 2.5 blast standard on every component
  • DFT verification on every batch โ€” recorded and shared
  • CE ISO certified steel structure (EN 1090-2 EXC2, ISO 9001:2015)
  • 5 production lines, 5,000+ tons/month, Shangqiu, Henan

Conclusion

Steel structure quality control is not about trust โ€” it's about verification. A structured factory inspection catches issues that would cost 10โ€“50ร— more to fix after delivery. For any project over $50,000, third-party pre-shipment inspection is not optional โ€” it's essential.
